AASHIQUI 2 is a gamble taken by the Bhatt camp and T series. In the forefront are two actors (with some good work behind them), one with proven pedigree and the other with a standard of his own.

We need to create a new bank of stars and the youth of today, however much they may idolize the bigger stars, are always on the lookout for fresh faces and newer talent they can identify with. With AASHIQUI 2, this is just what the makers have done: thrown in fresh faces and given them an opportunity to make a mark for themselves.

Apart from the protagonist and the heroine it is Shaad Randhawa who leaves a deep imprint  with his no-nonsense approach to his role of a manager to a fading singing sensation, who once saw better days. Icy cool and steely in his resolve to make things work for Rahul Jaykar (Aditya), Shaad adds that extra personal touch that tilts the scales against him. He is a certainly talent to look out for.

Shraddha Kapoor is a joy to watch. In just her third film, she reiterates that she is a talent to reckon with. She has the creative genes of both her parents; Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kolhapure. Whether struggling as a singer in a bar, or hitting the big time at a packed concert, she just rocks. Give her an emotional scene and she digs deep to leave her mark; a mild romantic track, and she is all bubbly and gooey eyed. A Kapoor to watch out for. Her feisty approach to her roles (right from TEEN PATTI) reminds me of Jodie Foster.

The story is a bit surprising. Rahul is this singer whose career-graph is on the wane. A few years ago, we are given to understand that he was a singing sensation. But why he hit the bottle with a vengeance is not explained. One would think that his love interest Aarohi (Sharaddha) would have been the reason for his alcoholic state and we would have been treated to a flashback. Surprisingly, and refreshingly, may I say, he meets Aarohi in one of his drunken stupor and she is not the reason for his state.

Aditya Roy Kapur is a likeable bloke. You look hard for flaws but he measures up to the expectations of the makers. He is sincere in his portrayal as a singing star that has hit the bottle and is now on the wane. It’s a surprise that he never once goes over the top. The only time he seems to be floundering is when the dialogues have no weight which leaves him wondering whether he said the right thing. In the very first scene, where he is to appear before a huge crowd at a concert in Goa, he is ‘chilled out’. He carries a scene meant for a seasoned actor like a pro.

Impressed with her singing, he decides to take it upon himself to give her a break and make her an even bigger star. He pursues her career and lines up all the right breaks. He is proved right by Aarohi; she does have that zing that takes her to the top on her singing abilities alone. As her career graph rises, so does Rahul’s count of the number of bottles he drowns.

Will it end in a fairytale like all Bollywood romances or is there a cruel twist of fate?

On the flipside, we see Rahul drowning ‘neat’ shots without even once getting drunk. I mean the only indication of him being drunk is his bloodshot eyes. There is no doddering in his steps or slurring in his speech. He also has a father who has just two conversations on the phone with him during the entire movie. In one he asks his son whether he is in love, and in the other he
says ”I can leave everything in New York and be there for you.”

But sadly, he is not there for his son. So what was the idea of having a ‘phone father’? The reason for his decline too is not structured which makes you wonder why this convenience in scripting.

Much has been spoken of the music, but for me, I hum none back home. If at all, I can still hear the soothing sound of Naazar ke Saamne, Jigar Ke Paas and Dheere Dheere…

AASHIQUI 2 had the potential to be a blockbuster. But the handling of a few key scenes are its downfall apart from the ‘convenient scripting’ I mentioned. However, at the end of the day, I believe that this is a gamble that will pay off. The youth are going to love it.

The 1988 blockbuster movie “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” was recently screened as a special show in Mumbai to commemorate its silver jubilee saw the attendance of its hero Aamir Khan with his relatives, and the film’s theme. The film’s leading woman Juhi Chawla arrived at the show lately. Aamir was accompanied by his family members, nephew Imran Khan and his wife Avantika, brother Faisal Khan and Aamir’s wife Kiran Rao. Aamir’s ex-wife Reena Dutta also witnessed the show. Aamir, who started his Bollywood first appearance in the dreamy film which was released on 29-4-1998, appeared extremely happy. He told journalists before screening the movie, “I am extremely happy the whole cast is meeting after a long time. Now we all will sit jointly and memorize all those old moments.” The director of “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak,” Mansoor Khan, singers Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and actor Makarand Deshpande were also presented on the occasion. Farhan Akhtar’s social campaign MARD launched during the IPL ceremony is getting amazing responses from the men around.The campaign speaks about protecting women against rape and other forms of discrimination. It was Shah Rukh Khan’s idea to launch it during IPL considering the major fan following comprises of guys. The logo of Farhan’s MARD is a moustache for M and stands for “Men Against Rape and Discrimination”. The moustache was distributed to Sunil Gavaskar and Jadeja in the studio where it was launched and to the players and the audience alike at the KKR vs. Punjab’s eleven match. The wonderful poetry about MARD that has got people talking was penned down by his father and the famous bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar. Two days since the campaign’s been launched and one can witness the depth at which it has influenced the men to like the page on twitter and facebook going to the extent of even changing their display pictures. Another initiative was taken by the company “Gillette” that is responsible for manufacturing razors for men.They came up with an ad that demanded of soldiers.However this time the country needed soldiers not for the battle at the borders but for the safety of their women.The commercial was awe-inspiring.It asked men to stand up and protect the most important citizen of the nation: their women. Kudos to the advertisement, it suited the brand’s tagline perfectly: “the best a man can get! “

More to the list are the men Chetan Bhagat, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. At a time when the country was smarting from the wounds that the demons inside the males inflicted upon the women,our politicians were on a verbal diarrhea giving speeches that made no sense to any “human” mind.At this juncture words from Chetan Bhagat, an author, a proud house-husband who talks about women empowerment and always believes that women can do better than men was reason enough to believe that “men” still exists. Aamir Khan,another feminist man did enough to show the nation in his show “Satyamev Jayate” the effects of female foetocides, domestic violence and dowry and how it plagued the society leading to its decay.Also

The film is a political thriller about the intelligence agents and terrorism. Shoojit Sircar and John Abraham were in association since the Vicky Donor days that turned out to be a huge hit and this is their second film as a director-producer duo. Fakhri may have seemed to disappear from the big screen with her last movie Rockstar released back in the year 2011 but the half Czech-half Pakistani beauty is no hurry making it quite evident that she will choose only big banners and successful directors to carve her niche out in Bollywood.

Nargis’ acting abilities were criticized in her last movie and even with those angelic charm and beauty she didn’t become the next B-town actress who were a hit with the commercials charging crores for her brand value. The only advertisement she appeared in was of Parachute hot hair oil.No matter how little attention she grabbed or how depressed she left her fans after that performance there can be doubt that the lady is a hard core professional when it all boils down to her work. She has been shooting for Madras Cafe recently where there was a scheduled bikini shoot to be done in the water. She had been flying back to back from L.A. to India where she had gone to meet her mother. However changes in the climate left her with a fever of 104F. Since the shoot was already scheduled and Johnny boy had no other dates free because of the promotional tours involved with his upcoming movie “Shootout at Wadala” it had to be done. And  Nargis just went ahead and did it brilliantly even though she was hot inside out. There was a doctor on the sets closely monitoring her and gave her the nod to complete the shoot.

Sure this practice in Bolly doesn’t feel out of the world.Remember how Vidya Balan already feverish while shooting for two hours continuously in the spring shower in the movie “The Dirty Picture” for the song “Ooh La La” had to be rushed to the hospital where she was admitted for two whole days. Also are heard of instances where the heroines are made to wear shortest of the short clothes and sleeveless blouses with chiffon sarees in the midst of snow peaked alpine. All in the name of professionalism and glamour! Also in news is a major catfight seething to take place between either Salman’s or Ranbir’s Katrina and neither Siddhartha’s nor Ranbir’s Deepika who have always been at loggerheads with each other. Currently DP shooting for “Chennai Express” where she is playing the lead is unhappy with the fact that there is a cameo by Katrina in it.It also looks like one of the major reason why bollywood isn’t obsessed with creating superheroes like the Hollywood because we have our own class of super-heroines and cat-women…err…catty women.

Movies are considered one of the best outlets for people to divert their day-today-work pressure. There are many movies releasing this summer with very high expectations. Some have already released. The teaser and  trailer of the movie were released recently, which became viral in the social websites. This is an animated movie about a prehistoric comedy adventure. This movie is about the world’s first family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime.

Another biggie which is expected to release this weekend is the Iron man 3. This movie’s cast includes Robert DowneyJr., Gwyneth Paltrow and has some excellent action scenes. This movie will be dubbed into all the regional languages and is expected to make a big opening this weekend. Not only Hollywood movies, but there are many Bollywood movies that are making a mark this summer. Recently the trailer of Raanjhana, starring South superstar Dhanush, was recently released and has been highly appreciated by the film fraternity. Dhanush plays the role of a UP youth and he has dubbed himself in Hindi. In this movie, Sonam Kapoor stars opposite Dhanush and it is to hit the theatres by the end of June. Another horror movie that has recently hit the screens is Ek Thi Dayaan starring Emran Haashmi. He plays the role of a leading magician, who faces problems because of the constant hallucinations in his profession.

Aashiqui 2 which has Shraddha kapoor and Shaad Randhawa in the lead is releasing next week. This movie is based on the music industry and already the songs are topping the charts. Aashiqui was made in 1990 which was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The movie also has Mahesh Bhatt playing a guest role. Chasme Bhadoor and Nautanki Saala are two medium budget movies which were released last week. They fared decently at the box office for the amount of investment made on it. Chasme Bhadoor was a remake of the old Chasme Bhadoor and it was targeted at the youth with some peppy numbers. Nautanki Saala had Anshuman Khuranna in the lead and was a mediocre movie in terms of box office performance.

The movies of the big stars in Bollywood are still in the making. Shahrukh Khan has already started shooting for his next flick called Chennai Express. In this movie Deepika Padukone has been paired opposite to him. Aamir Khan is supposedly shooting for Dhoom 3 in which he is believed to be playing a negative role. What can be expected is a lot of popcorn and cold drink sales in 2013 because people will be flocking the movie theatres to catch all these great movies.

Sunny caused quite a stir among the men when she decided to join bollywood stepping straight out of the adult films.Papa Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt had immense faith in the girl thinking it would do good for the business and the movie. Though the moviewas a huge flop ,Sunny was busy basking in the sunshine. With advertisements flocking up at her doorstep,various controversy on twitter to girls queuing up for an autograph she got all the attention-wanted and unwanted.However much we expected her to be our next Katrina Kaif trying desperately to learn hindi to become the queen of bolly,our Leone babe seems to have no such plans. Ask why? The upcoming movie “Shootout at Wadala” finds “Laila” grooving to some desi beats in an itsy-bitsy choli and ghagra obviously. Yes she was wearing enough clothes,silly! Though the song was no-good,Sunny was all steamy.Seems the girl has brains and she knows where the real money lies. With oodles of oomph Sunny knows acting isn’t her cup of tea and she is set to start her 2nd innings as the next item girl busy making hay…err…money while her “jawaani” shines.

Dharma Productions

No no no! We aren’t that attention seeking as Ram Gopal Verma .We have work to do.But this production house by Hiroo Yash Johar and Karan Johar deserves a special mention. Remember how last year Karan Johar directed “Student of the year” in order to launch the three star kids. The college and the life of the students in the movie was far from real leaving many miserable about not finding bikini-clad women and hunks in trunks in their college. Most of Dharma Production movies have always been glossy and larger than life but this one was the ultimate. However better sense has prevailed and upcoming venture of the production house “Gippi” directed by debutante director Shobha Nair revolving around teenaged school kids and their growing up issues looks relatively simpler and sweet and the publicity of the movie is so not K Jo-ish.Looks like someone is getting real. Time for phase two in reel and real.

Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi

This is one power Jodi of a serial kisser and the smooth and sexy silk”!Last seen sizzling in “the dirty picture” this pair has the potential to become one of the unconventional famous pair of bollywood. Back again for the second time but this time for a super hilarious comedy “Ghanchakkar” the trailer already looks “palangtod” with a funny looking Hashmi in pyjamas and Mrs.Siddhartha Roy Kapoor mouthing solid dialogues in Punjabi. Marriage should have been the only workshop Vidya would have needed to get into her role. This is the first time she is seen experimenting with an out and out comedy.Emraan’s choice of movies(after he moved over murder and crook) is already putting him on the list of bolly’s versatile actors.We are super excited for the second innings that this pair had a “shubh aarambh” with. Fingers crossed !
